Event Notes
Betty Zhang is know in China as the "Queen of Chinese String Music" and "Princess of the Ancient Chinese Musical Chamber". She was born in the province of Yuan Nan, China and began her studies in music at age eight, learning under such well-known teachers of Shi-Ching Lin and Dah-Hi Liu, both masters of the pipa, a Chinese 4-stringed lute. She furthered her studies by researching the long-lost musical instruments of her native province, particularly the dingqin and hulusi of the Tai Tribe, the 4-stringed qin of the Yi Tribe, and the sanxian of the La-Gu Tribe. For this concert, she will be performing on the pipa as well as the guzheng (a Chinese zither with 16-25 strings), the yueqin and the hulusi of the Tai Tribe.
